Dilated Diabetic Exams

Diabetics run a significant risk of damaging changes in the retina that can decrease vision and even create blindness. Once these retinopathies have occurred, they cannot be reversed—the damage is permanent.

It’s much better to monitor and manage the condition of the eyes yearly than it is to wait for damage to occur, because prevention is possible if there is adequate warning. In order to be safe and proactive, every diabetic should have a yearly dilated fundus study (an examination of the retina) with photographs that become a permanent part of the record and help to identify yearly changes early on.

In addition, a threshold visual field study should be performed to assess the health of the retina and optic nerve. This is an easy and remarkably sensitive test that looks at the health of the retinal nerve tissue and creates a very specific map of any problem areas.

We routinely provide these services, and bill your medical insurance, not your vision insurance. It you’re a diabetic, you should take steps to assure the health of your eyes by knowing exactly how your disease is affecting them. An ounce of prevention.
