Cataracts
Discoloration of the lens caused by Cataracts.
A Cataract is simply a clouding of the lens of the eye. Radiation, diabetes and certain medications may promote the early development of Cataracts.
For most people over the age of 50, a mild Cataract doesn't require immediate removal. Since Cataracts usually occur in one eye before the other, vision is not always completely obscured.
A Cataract is diagnosed by examining the inside of the eye with a microscope. Once a Cataract is diagnosed it can be removed at any time. Unfortunately, once the lens has become cloudy enough to require removal, there is no medical or nutritional method of clearing up the cataract.
Once the lens of the eye is clouded, the Cataract is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. For persons over 60, some patients with artificial lenses will actually see better than their counterparts who have never had cataracts. Modern Cataract surgeries are 95% successful in improving vision.
